Moving to Genoa / Liguria
— what we know about it
Liguria is the corridor where the coastal route to Italy makes most sense. The France-via-Lyon coastal motorway south to the Cote d'Azur and into Liguria is faster than the alpine crossing for these destinations. The narrow strip of coastal Liguria — Genoa in the centre, the Riviera di Ponente west to Sanremo and the French border, the Riviera di Levante east to La Spezia and the Cinque Terre — is logistically distinctive.
Genoa itself is the regional centre — large historic port with substantial UK shipping-and-maritime community, listed 16th-century centre (UNESCO Palazzi dei Rolli), gentrified former-working-class waterfront (Porto Antico), and modern hill-side residential (Albaro, Quinto). The Genoa centro storico is one of Europe's largest medieval centres and substantially pedestrian-only — small-van shuttle the standard practice. Outside the centre, the city's amphitheatre topography (steep hills directly behind a narrow coastal strip) means many residential addresses involve serious gradient — sometimes funicular-only access, often steep-stair work.
The Cinque Terre (Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, Riomaggiore) is among Italy's most logistically demanding destinations. The five villages are connected by walking trails, train, and boat — vehicle access is severely limited or impossible to most properties. Moves require careful planning: lorry parks at La Spezia or in the Cinque Terre access roads where they exist; goods transfer to small-vehicle or hand-trolley; sometimes hoist work for sea-cliff properties. We have done these moves; the cost reflects the additional handling.
Portofino and Santa Margherita Ligure are high-end coastal destinations with concierge-building access and gated developments. Sanremo and the western Riviera (Imperia, Bordighera) host an established UK retirement community since the late 19th century — substantial historical British presence in San Remo specifically. La Spezia and the eastern Liguria are more industrial-and-modern, with standard apartment access.
