A full house removal to Italy covers the whole chain from your UK door to your Italian one: a survey and bilingual inventory, packing and dismantling, the UK export declaration, the Alpine crossing, the Italian transfer-of-residence claim, and access planning at the delivery address, all carried out under one written, itemised quote.
At the UK end, a surveyor walks through every room with you, in person or by video, and notes what is coming, what is being sold or given away, and which pieces need crating. That list becomes the inventory that travels with the load and the one Italian customs will see, so it is written in English and Italian. On collection day the same crew packs, dismantles and loads, then drives south and carries everything in at the other end. Beds and wardrobes are reassembled, and packing debris can be taken away on request.
Why is the Italian address the starting point of the plan?
Because the last stretch decides the vehicle, the crew and the equipment. An Italian address may sit inside a camera-enforced historic centre, at the top of a narrow condominio stairwell or at the end of a gravel lane, so we plan the move backwards from that front door rather than forwards from the UK house.
In Florence, Rome, Bologna and plenty of smaller towns the centro storico is a ZTL, a zona a traffico limitato. A removal vehicle needs a temporary access permit from the comune or the polizia locale, and often a separate permit to occupy the street while unloading, known as occupazione di suolo pubblico. We apply for both where the comune lets a mover do so, and tell you early if the application has to come from the resident. Survey photographs and a map pin of the street let us judge all of this before the quote is written.
How does the crew get furniture into an Italian apartment or farmhouse?
With whichever method the building allows. Where stairs or lifts are too tight, Italian movers use a montamobili, an external furniture lift that raises items to a balcony or window. On rural property, a shuttle van meets the main vehicle where the lorry can stop safely and finishes the run along the gravel.
Inside the building, the regolamento condominiale may limit moving to set hours, require the amministratore to be told in advance, or bar furniture from the lift. Our Italian-speaking coordinator contacts the amministratore or the portiere on your behalf, so the building expects the crew. Out in the countryside, strade bianche in Tuscany, Umbria and Le Marche can be too narrow, steep or soft for a full-size lorry, especially after rain. We agree the transfer point at survey and quote the shuttle runs needed to bring everything up to the house.
Which route does a full house removal take into Italy?
The route is chosen for your region. Loads for the north-west usually run to the Mont Blanc or Fréjus tunnel, loads for the north-east often take the Brenner route, and Liguria is reached along the Riviera coast road. Addresses in Sicily or Sardinia add a ferry leg from a mainland port.
Your written quote names the route we intend to use and explains why it suits your address. Picking the crossing by destination keeps the drive inside Italy as short as possible, which matters on a load that has to arrive in good order and to an agreed plan. If a tunnel is closed for maintenance or weather, the vehicle switches to another crossing rather than the move being cancelled, and the coordinator tells you if the plan changes. Island deliveries are planned around ferry sailings, and a local van finishes the drop where island streets are tight.
How do household goods enter Italy without import duty?
Through transfer-of-residence relief. Personal goods you have owned and used for a qualifying period can enter Italy without import duty or VAT when you move your normal residence there. We prepare the claim and the supporting inventory; you supply the evidence only you can provide, such as your passport and Anagrafe registration.
The Agenzia delle Dogane e dei Monopoli, Italy's customs authority, sets the conditions, including how long you must have lived outside the EU and what proof of residence is accepted. On the UK side, the export declaration is lodged by our customs agents, and private individuals moving their own household goods do not normally need an EORI number. There is no ToR1 form on this route either: ToR1 is a UK form for people moving their residence into the UK, not out of it.
