What is Milan housing like for a household arriving from the UK?
Most of Milan is apartment living. Brera, Magenta and Porta Venezia have early twentieth-century palazzi with concierge desks and modest lifts. Isola and Porta Nuova have new towers with managed loading bays. Navigli, Tortona and NoLo mix lofts with case di ringhiera, the classic balcony-access courtyard blocks.
The building type decides the method. In a casa di ringhiera, flats open onto long shared balconies around a courtyard. Furniture goes up a common stair and along the balcony, and large pieces sometimes go up by external hoist. Older palazzi often have a porter who controls the courtyard and lift, and who expects notice.
The new developments in Porta Nuova and CityLife work differently. Deliveries go through a service entrance or underground bay with booked slots. Building managers ask for insurance details in advance and protect the lifts before use. We gather these requirements at survey, so the crew arrives with the right paperwork.
How do Area B and Area C affect a move in Milan?
Area B is a low-emission zone covering most of the city. It is enforced by cameras and keeps older, more polluting vehicles out. Area C is the congestion-charge zone inside the Cerchia dei Bastioni, with its own rules for goods vehicles. We plan the vehicle and the access permits around both before confirming a Milan delivery.
For you, the practical point is simple. The lorry used for your delivery has to meet the emission standards the zones require. Any Area C entry charge appears on your written quote, not as a surprise afterwards. Addresses inside the Cerchia dei Bastioni also need the parking question solved, because kerb space in Brera or near the Duomo is scarce.
Standing a lorry or a hoist on a Milanese street generally needs a permit to occupy public land from the Comune di Milano. Where that cannot be arranged at the door, we unload at the nearest legal point and finish with a smaller van.
Which way does a lorry travel from the UK to Milan?
Most Milan moves cross France and enter Italy through the Mont Blanc tunnel. The lorry then runs down the Aosta Valley and across the Po plain towards Milan. When the tunnel is closed, or a collection suits it better, the usual alternative is the Fréjus tunnel into the Susa Valley and on past Turin.
Milan sits close to the alpine crossings compared with cities further south. That makes it a natural first drop on a run that continues to other northern cities. The same approach serves Bergamo, Brescia and the lake shores. We choose the final leg to avoid town centres where a large vehicle would struggle.
Both tunnels have rules on vehicle size and on the goods a lorry may carry. The Mont Blanc tunnel also has planned maintenance closures. We check the crossing before confirming your collection. Your written quote tells you which route the lorry will take.
What should you know before moving to Lake Como, Garda or Maggiore?
The lakes are beautiful but awkward for removals. Shore roads are narrow and often squeezed between rock and water, with tunnels, tight bends and few places to stop. Villas sit above or below the road on steep private drives. Most lake moves therefore finish with a smaller vehicle and a crew carrying by hand.
On Lake Como, the western shore road through Cernobbio, Tremezzo and Menaggio is the tightest, and Bellagio's centre is a stepped village. Lake Garda's western shore, from Salò to Limone, runs through a series of tunnels where height and width count. On Lake Maggiore, Stresa and Verbania are in Piedmont, while Luino and Laveno are in Lombardy. We serve both shores on the same run.
Bergamo's Città Alta is its own case. The walled upper town is largely closed to traffic. We stage in the lower town and shuttle up with a small van.
What paperwork follows a move to Milan?
Expect to register your residence at the Comune di Milano anagrafe and to hold a codice fiscale. Where your status requires it, you also apply for a permesso di soggiorno through the Questura di Milano. Corporate transferees often arrive on a work visa arranged by their employer, which shapes the order of these steps.
Milan is split into nine municipi, and you register with the anagrafe service for your new address. As elsewhere in Italy, the polizia locale usually checks that you live there before registration is confirmed. Keep your name visible at the entrance.
For employer-sponsored moves, HR or an immigration adviser generally handles the work permit and visa.
