Can pets travel on the removal vehicle to Italy?
No. Animals never travel on a removal vehicle, because a lorry crossing the Alps has no ventilation, temperature control or supervision suitable for them, and no reputable mover carries them. Dogs, cats and ferrets travel with you by car or plane, or with a specialist pet transport firm, and we plan the household move around their arrival.

What documents does a pet need to travel from the UK to Italy?
A microchip, a rabies vaccination given after the microchip, and an Animal Health Certificate issued by an Official Veterinarian shortly before travel. A waiting period applies after a first rabies vaccination, and the certificate is valid for entry only within a short window after it is signed.
GOV.UK publishes the exact periods on its page about taking your pet dog, cat or ferret abroad, and those are the ones to plan around. Pet travel rules between the UK and the EU have been under review, so check that page when you start planning and again before you go. Microchipping, vaccination and the certificate are charged by your vet, not by us. Not every practice has an Official Veterinarian, so ask your own vet early whether they can issue the certificate or which nearby practice can.
When should I book the vet for the travel certificate?
Book early, but for the right moment. The Animal Health Certificate must be issued close to your travel date, so the appointment has to be timed around when you will actually cross. Official Veterinarians' diaries fill up, so ring the practice as soon as you have a removal date.
Ask how far ahead the practice takes bookings and whether it needs anything from you beforehand, such as vaccination records. If your removal date might move, for example because the rogito is delayed, keep the pet plan flexible too. It is far easier to hold furniture in storage for longer than to repeat a certificate that has expired before you could travel. If the furniture date changes, the coordinator tells you straight away so you can decide whether the vet appointment needs to move as well.
How do most families travel to Italy with a pet?
Most drive. The Channel Tunnel shuttle accepts pets in your car once their documents are checked at the pet reception point, and the journey continues to the Mont Blanc or Fréjus tunnel. Others fly with an airline that carries animals, or hand the whole journey to a specialist pet courier.
