Which alpine crossing suits a move to Turin?
The Fréjus tunnel is the most direct way into Turin. After crossing France, the lorry passes from Modane to Bardonecchia. It then follows the motorway down the Susa Valley straight into the city. The Mont Blanc tunnel and the Aosta Valley are the alternative, and suit northern Piedmont and the Canavese.
Because the Fréjus route ends at Turin's western edge, the city is one of the simpler Italian destinations to reach. The Susa Valley resorts, including Bardonecchia, Oulx and Sauze d'Oulx, sit along the same road. For the Langhe, Monferrato and Cuneo, the lorry continues south-east from Turin towards Asti and Alba.
Both tunnels have size rules for vehicles and occasional maintenance closures. Winter equipment is required on the mountain roads in the cold months. We confirm the crossing when we book the move and name it on your written quote.
What is housing like in central Turin?
Central Turin is a city of Baroque and nineteenth-century palazzi on a regular grid. Long porticoes line Via Roma, Via Po and the main squares. Streets are wider than in most Italian historic centres, which helps a lorry. The central ZTL still applies, and flats share courtyards, stairs and condominio rules.
Most Turin palazzi open through a large portone into a courtyard, which often gives a sheltered loading point. Lifts tend to be small. Tall wardrobes and sofas may go up the stairs or by hoist from the courtyard. The Quadrilatero Romano, the oldest quarter, has narrower streets where a smaller van works better.
Outside the centre, Crocetta and San Salvario mix Liberty-style villas with apartment buildings. The hillside across the Po, from Borgo Po to Cavoretto, has villas on steep, curving roads. Lingotto and the former industrial areas to the south offer modern flats with easy parking.
How do moves to the Langhe, Roero and Monferrato work?
Much like rural Tuscany. Wine-country houses around Alba, La Morra, Barolo, Barbaresco and the Monferrato hills sit on ridges. They are reached by narrow, winding lanes, some unsealed. We bring the lorry as close as the road allows, then use a smaller vehicle for the last stretch to the cascina or village house.
The vineyard landscapes of the Langhe-Roero and Monferrato are UNESCO-listed. Many properties are old cascine with barns, cellars and external stairs. During the grape harvest, lanes fill with tractors and trailers. We plan around it and agree a delivery window with you early.
Cellars matter here. Many buyers arrive with wine of their own, and some properties have a working cantina. We wrap bottles carefully and prepare the paperwork private wine needs to enter Italy. Village centres such as La Morra and Neive are compact, so a word with the comune before move day helps.
What should you plan for in the Susa Valley and the mountain resorts?
Season and vehicle size. Resorts such as Bardonecchia, Sestriere, Sauze d'Oulx and Claviere are reached by mountain roads. Snow, winter equipment rules and ski-season traffic all complicate a removal. We prefer to schedule these moves outside the ski season and use a smaller vehicle for chalets with steep or narrow drives.
Many resort flats are second homes in purpose-built blocks. They have shared garages and lifts that need booking with the building manager. Older stone houses in the valley villages have narrow streets and external stairs. They feel more like rural Piedmont than a ski resort.
Further south, the Cuneo valleys and the Maritime Alps are quieter. Farmhouses and village homes there are reached by long valley roads. These work best as planned deliveries with good notice, so the crew can allow enough time for the final climb.
What paperwork applies after moving to Piedmont?
Register your residence with the anagrafe of your comune and get a codice fiscale if you do not have one. Where your status requires it, apply for a permesso di soggiorno through the Questura di Torino or the Questura in Cuneo, Asti or Alessandria. We time the delivery to suit those steps.
Turin is divided into circoscrizioni, each with anagrafe services, while country households deal with their village comune. As elsewhere, the polizia locale usually checks the address after you register. Make sure your name is on the entryphone or gate.

It is possible but difficult during the ski season, so we recommend moving outside it. Snow, winter equipment rules and resort traffic all slow a large vehicle on the Susa Valley roads, and parking near chalets is limited when the resorts are busy. Outside the season the lorry can reach most addresses directly, helped by the fact that the Susa Valley sits right below the Fréjus approach.
